The Middle Ages

 

6th – 14th century

 

 

 Guiding Question: Was the pervasiveness of Christian ideal in medieval society a necessity or an imposition of the Church?

 

For this essay, you will assess the role of the Roman Catholic Church in medieval Western Europe from the 8th - 13th  centuries.    

 

Pre-writing Process

  1. In order to fully address the guiding question, you must first know the meaning of "Christian ideal". Look it up and be sure to understand it in the context of medieval religious practice.

  2. Next you must identify evidence of the Christian ideal in the social mores (customs) of the Middle Ages. [PERSIA]

  3. Finally, you will assess how the Church used their influence to shape the direction of the Middle Ages. In other words, how did the Church influence the overall development of Medieval Europe.

Writing your Essay

 

Guiding Question: Was the pervasiveness of Christian ideal in medieval society a necessity or an imposition of the Church?

 

ü  Create a clear arguable thesis statement that unifies and focuses your response.  The thesis statement is not a topic sentence, but rather an assertion, which answers the guiding question and focuses the remaining paragraphs to provide supporting evidence.

 

ü  Create clear arguments with logical organization using evidence from the unit and outside source documents to support.  The organization should follow a logical pattern as introduced by the thesis.

 

ü  Provide ample and specific evidence from at least six sources used in class and two outside primary source documents.

 

 

ü  Cite your sources using MLA format and created a works cited page.  Refer to The OWL at Purdue
